Commemoration
ceremony
The World Health Day 2008 commenced with an official
commemoration ceremony organized by the Ministry of Health, Union of Myanmar,
which was held in the Ministry of Health meeting room in Nay Pyi Taw on the morning of the 7th April 2008. The
ceremony was addressed by the Minister for Health, H.E. Professor Kyaw Myint.
Also present at the occasion were the Deputy Ministers, Directors General,
Deputy Directors General and officials of the Ministry of Health,
representatives of local NGOs, and staff from health related departments and
local press.
H.E. Professor Kyaw Myint, Minister of Health delivered a
speech and Acting WHO Representative to Myanmar, Dr Hans Kluge read out
the message of the Regional Director of WHO South East Asia Region.
Exhibition
The guests were then invited to view a mini exhibition
“Protecting health from climate change”, in which photos of activities of the
Ministry of Health and also information, education and communication
materials such as World Health Day magazines, posters and health statistics
were shown. The information materials highlighted the events and activities
related to climate change and health.
Publications
A World Health Day Magazine and posters featuring the
World Health Day Theme both in Myanmar and English languages
were developed and published by Ministry of Heath and distributed to the
guests at the opening ceremony. The magazine highlights articles on health
and climate change.
WHO Myanmar also produced green color T-shirts, green
advocacy bags, green note pads and key chains with World Health Day logo
which were distributed at the ceremony on the morning of World Health Day at
the meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw. A WHO fact sheet
on “Protecting health from climate change” in English was especially produced
along with the regular WHO Myanmar quarterly newsletter and distributed. The
fact sheet also featured the World Health Day message from Dr Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional
Director of WHO South East Asia Region.

Protecting health from climate change
This year the Ministry of Health produced a big banner
depicting effects of climate change, which was erected at the entrance of the
Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw.
Banners
WHO Country Office produced four banners in different
colors featuring the World Health Day Theme. These banners were displayed at
the entrance of WHO Country office in Yangon
at Traders Hotel since 1st April 2008. After the World Health Day 2008 at Nay
Pyi Taw they are now displayed in front of the
reception desk of WHO Country Office.
TV and Radio
Acting WHO Representative to Myanmar, Dr. Hans Kluge was
interviewed by Myanmar TV (MRTV) on the World Health day theme “Protecting
Health from Climate Change”.
TV and radio discussions and talk shows on the World
Health Day theme were produced and telecasted. TV, radio and cinema
announcements were also developed and inserted in the programmes.
Radio Myanmar
and Myanmar TV (MRTV and Myawaddy TV) aired the
World Health Day theme in 8 different ethnic languages. Public announcements
and articles were published in newspapers, journals and magazines.
The World Health Day ceremonies conducted at the central
level as well as State/Division level were also featured on the official TV
channels namely MRTV, Myawaddy (MWD) and MRTV4.
Technical seminar
at Nay Pyi Taw on “Protecting health from climate
change”
After the opening ceremony at Nay Pyi
Taw a technical seminar on the theme of the 2008 World Health Day was held in
the Ministry of Health meeting hall. The moderator was Dr Khin Maung Lwin,
Director of Central Health Education Bureau, Ministry
of Health.
Dr Hans Kluge, Acting WHO Representative, gave a
presentation on “Human health impacts from climate variability and climate
change”, followed by presentations from the following speakers:
U Thein Tun, Deputy Director General from
Department of Meteorology and Hydrology
Dr. Thein Thein Htay – Director Public Health
Dr. Phone Yaung-Deputy
Director, Watsan
U Myint Soe – Director-Myanmar Motion Pictures
on the role of media and climate change
U Po Nyan (movie
actor ) – Experiences on his role as an actor in promoting health in the
media
Dr Khin Myat Tun,
Director, Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar)
discussed briefly on arsenic in water related to climate change.
The seminar concluded at noon with presentation of the
draft recommendations for further consideration regarding future actions to
address climate change was given by Dr. Khin Maung Lwin, Director of Health
Education Bureau, Ministry of Health.
