Providing technical assistance to the National TB Programme (NTP), particularly on:
developing TB control policies and strategies;
building capacity to sustain, improve and
further intensify Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS)
implementation;
scaling up and strengthening inter-sectoral partnerships for DOTS;
improving community awareness and utilization
of DOTS;
addressing HIV related TB and anti-TB drug
resistance under programme conditions;
measuring progress towards Millennium
Development Goals;
designing and disseminating information,
education and communication messages;
improving operational
research to strengthen DOTS implementation, together with the Department of
Medical Research.
Facilitating partnership, including with the
Global TB Drug Facility.
Providing technical expertise to the joint programme implementation through Technical Working Group
on TB.
Disseminating scientific information.
Organizing external two-yearly review of the
NTP.
Advocacy and raising commitment for TB
control.
Resource mobilization for TB and TB-HIV.
In-country presence of WHO Advisor for TB and
TB-HIV.

The Ministry of Health, Myanmar
with support from the WHO convened the Partners’ Meeting on “Sustainable TB
Drug Supply in Myanmar”
in Naypyitaw on 1st December 2008. The meeting
was chaired by the Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and attended
by the Deputy Ministers for Health Professor Mya Oo and Professor Paing
Soe, Director Generals and Deputy Director Generals of Departments under
the Ministry of Health, Ambassadors/Representatives of Embassies of United
Kingdom, Australia, United States of America, Japan, UN Resident Representative/UN
Resident Coordinator, Country Representatives of WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNAIDS,

A step forward on: TB HIV Collaborative Activities in
Myanmar
(The Basic Minimum Package of Interventions for TB/HIV at District/Township
level)

According to the sentinel results in 2005, about 7.1% of
TB sputum smear positive patients were found HIV positive. Since then, WHO
in collaboration with MOH re-initiated a pilot programme
in 2 high prevalence townships on collaborative prevention and control
activities for TB HIV.
