“Urbanization and Health: Urban Health Matters”

Commemoration ceremony

The World Health Day 2010 event commenced with an official commemoration ceremony organized by the Ministry of Health, Union of Myanmar, which was held in the main conference hall of Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw on the morning of the 7th April 2010. The ceremony was addressed by the Deputy Minister for Health, H.E. Professor Paing Soe. Also present at the occasion were the Deputy Ministers, Directors General, Deputy Directors General and officials of the Ministry of Health, representatives of local NGOs, United Nations Agencies, staff from health related departments and local press.

H.E. Professor Paing Soe, Deputy Minister of Health delivered a speech and Acting WHO Representative to Myanmar, Dr Leonard Ortega read out the message of the Regional Director of WHO South East Asia Region.

 

Exhibition

The guests were then invited to view a mini exhibition “Urbanization and Health”, in which photos of activities of the Ministry of Health and also information, education and communication materials such as World Health Day magazines, posters and health statistics were shown. The information materials highlighted the events and activities related to creating of healthy environments in urban settings and other collaborative activities being implemented jointly by the Ministry of Health and WHO.

 

Publications

A World Health Day Magazine and posters featuring the World Health Day Theme both in Myanmar and English languages were developed and published by Ministry of Heath and distributed to the guests at the opening ceremony. The magazine highlights articles on urbanization and health.

WHO Myanmar also produced blue color T-shirts and blue advocacy bags, with World Health Day logos, which were distributed at the ceremony on the morning of World Health Day at the meeting hall in Nay Pyi Taw. A WHO fact sheet on “Urbanization and Health,” in English was especially produced along with the regular WHO Myanmar quarterly newsletter and distributed. The fact sheet also featured the World Health Day message from Dr Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional Director of WHO South East Asia Region.

 

Banners

WHO Country Office produced five banners in different photos taken by WHO Myanmar staff featuring the World Health Day Theme. These banners were displayed at the entrance of main venue of the World Health Day 2010 ceremony at Nay Pyi Taw. They are now displayed in front of the library of WHO Country Office.

 

Billboard

This year the Ministry of Health produced a big billboard  depicting effects of urbanization on health, which was erected at the entrance of the Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw.

The big billboard would remain erected for certain period of time to be seen by general public. The main objective of such a huge illustrative billboard on the main road is to raise awareness among the broader audience and community, including those from various other sectors, who are the stakeholders of urban health.

 

Technical seminar

After the main commemorative ceremony at Nay Pyi Taw, a technical seminar on the theme of the 2010 World Health Day was held in the Ministry of Health meeting hall. The moderator was Dr Khin Maung Lwin, Director of Central Health Education Bureau, Ministry of Health.

Dr Leonard Ortega, Acting WHO Representative, gave a presentation on “Urbanization and Health: Urban Health Matters”, that was followed by presentations by two more speakers:

The seminar highlighted the various issues related to health consequences of urbanizations and measures being taken to deal with them in collaboration with different partners. The audience representing various sectors participated actively and raised questions. Panel members also responded to the comments and questions raised by the audience.

The seminar concluded at noon with presentation of the draft recommendations for further consideration regarding future actions to address urban health that was given by the moderator, Dr. Khin Maung Lwin, Director of Health Education Bureau, Ministry of Health.
